Kill-A-Watts Win Volleyball Playoff Championship

McClure Engineering’s sand volleyball season served up team spirit, growth, and a milestone championship as the Kill-A-Watts brought home the company’s first volleyball playoff title.

McClure Engineering had two sand volleyball teams take the court on our second season: the Kill-A-Watts and the Air-Handlers. The Air-Handlers, made up of our volleyball newbies, had a great season and are excited to keep improving next year, even though their playoff run ended in the first round. Meanwhile, the Kill-A-Watts capped off an unforgettable season with a big win in the Brentwood Sand Volleyball Playoffs, earning McClure Engineering our first volleyball playoff championship.

The league featured 18 teams in a two-week, single-elimination playoff bracket. The Kill-A-Watts entered the playoffs ranked third in high rec and fifth overall across both high-rec and low-rec teams, but they were ready to climb.

Led by Captain Genevieve Bourgeois, the championship lineup included Maggie Leffel, Brendan Sands, Connor Sands, Mike Stiebel, and Lisa Whealon. Dressed in their green jerseys and battling 97-degree heat, the team came prepared for a long night on the sand.

The night started with a matchup against the Sixers. After pushing through a scorching first set, the Kill-A-Watts found their rhythm in the shade and rolled to a dominant second-set win. From there, they took on Amy’s Team, a squad that had nearly beaten them during the regular season. This time, the Kill-A-Watts kept control and advanced to the championship.

At 9 p.m., the Kill-A-Watts faced BLOCKBUSTERS, a team that had beaten them earlier in the season and knocked off the previous league winners. The Kill-A-Watts won the first set, dropped the second, and headed into a final championship set to 15.

Seven sets deep and exhausted from the heat, the Kill-A-Watts dug in. With serving runs, aces, kills, and strong defensive play, they won the final set 15-10 and sealed the championship.
