Energy Efficiency Delivers Big Wins

Two of McClure Engineering’s recent projects show how thoughtful engineering can reduce costs, conserve energy, and create lasting value.

From a new high school gymnasium to a landmark performing arts venue, energy-efficient design is helping our clients lower operating costs, reduce emissions, and reinvest in their missions.

Two recent projects demonstrate what is possible when smart design decisions are paired with long-term performance goals.

A High-Performance Home Court

Dunklin R-5 School District’s new Herculaneum High School Gym is projected to use 70% less energy than a code-compliant baseline. That performance translates into significant annual savings:

  • 211,712 kWh in electricity
  • $22,003 in energy costs
  • 175 metric tons of CO₂ emissions

The project also earned $67,325 in Ameren Missouri incentives and helped McClure Engineering receive a 2026 ASHRAE St. Louis Technology Award. Together, these results show how efficient systems can deliver immediate financial value while supporting a school district’s long-term stewardship goals.

Efficiency Takes Center Stage

Energy efficiency is also paying dividends at one of the region’s most celebrated cultural institutions. On September 1, Spire presented the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) with a $130,000 rebate for energy-saving improvements installed at Powell Hall and the Jack C. Taylor Music Center. The award follows the $598,499 rebate the SLSO received from Ameren Missouri last year.

The Spire rebate reflects the orchestra’s participation in the utility’s energy efficiency programs over the past two years. Together, these incentives demonstrate how thoughtful building upgrades can reduce utility costs, strengthen operational performance, and support long-term sustainability goals.

Designing for Lasting Value

These projects serve different communities and purposes, but they share a common lesson: energy efficiency is an investment in long-term performance. Thoughtful building systems can lower operating expenses, conserve resources, unlock utility incentives, and deliver measurable value for years to come.
When smart design meets clear performance goals, everyone wins.
