Red Cedar Inn Renovation

The Red Cedar Inn, a log-built structure constructed by bootleggers James and Bill Smith in 1932, served as a renowned restaurant and tourist destination along Route 66 in Pacific, Missouri. Following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the Smith Brothers expanded their establishment to include a legal tavern, and the Inn remained under the ownership and operation of the Smith Family for the next eight decades. Over time, it transitioned into housing the offices of Gallagher’s heating and mechanical business.

Recognized as an iconic landmark along the historic Route 66, the Red Cedar Inn received prestigious recognition when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. In 2017, the City of Pacific acquired the Inn, envisioning its transformation into a community amenity that pays homage to its heritage.

To bring this vision to life, McClure Engineering teamed up with Patterhn Ives Architects in 2019. Our collaborative effort aimed to fully restore the Red Cedar Inn as a Welcome Center, effectively becoming the new symbolic “Doorway to the Ozarks” along the Mother Road. The restored Inn would not only serve as an information center but would also house a history museum and genealogy center, ensuring its significance in preserving the region’s cultural legacy.

While bringing modern sensibilities to the space, great care and attention were devoted to maintaining the historic integrity of the structure. Honoring its place on the National Register of Historic Places, the renovated Inn seamlessly blends timeless charm with contemporary amenities, attracting visitors from far and wide.

In addition to the meticulous restoration, the project encompassed various enhancements to the surrounding area. An outdoor pavilion with open seating was added to create a charming gathering space. Expanded parking facilities were incorporated to accommodate an influx of visitors. Furthermore, landscape improvements were integrated, incorporating the natural beauty of the surroundings. The potential connections from the Inn to Jensen’s Point and the Meramec Valley Greenway Trail would further solidify the Inn’s status as a must-visit destination for both city dwellers and travelers on Route 66.

McClure Engineering played a key role in this ambitious undertaking. Our expertise encompassed design, construction administration, and renovation services for the historic building. Upgrades included the implementation of VRF cooling for the HVAC systems, installation of a DOS ventilation system, and upgrading the on-site utility services such as water, waste, and electricity. Additionally, our responsibilities extended to Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, and HVAC design services for both the Inn’s renovation and the construction of the new addition, which entailed the demolition of the rear façade.

With the collaboration of McClure Engineering, Patterhn Ives Architects, and the City of Pacific, the Red Cedar Inn now stands as a restored gem along Route 66. Preserving its storied past while embracing the possibilities of the future, the Inn welcomes travelers as a vibrant community hub, inviting them to explore the region’s history and forge new memories against the backdrop of authentic charm and modern comfort.
