South 40 Residence Area Underground Utility Replacement

Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri

Project Background

An $8.6M replacement of the campus utility infrastructure consisting of 2,500 linear feet of utility trench, totaling 13,000 feet of direct buried mechanical/plumbing utility piping. Additionally, the project consisted of 1,800 linear feet of each electrical and telecom duct banks.

Project Deliverables

The project was completed over a single summer with less than 8-hour outages per building for reconnection. The project’s challenges were replacing 50-year-old direct buried infrastructure with poor documentation while keeping a residential campus in operation during a massive construction undertaking during a single summer.
